Taurus Tx22 Cost - The Taurus mid-sized TX22 pistol has become popular with many shooters looking for a .22 LR trainer to complement their centerfire-sized personal defense pistol. It was inevitable that they would introduce a competing version, and in early 2021, that happened.
Built on the same polymer frame as the original, the Taurus TX22 Competition ($484.85, taurustx22.com) features a hard-anodized aluminum slide, a fixed 5.25-inch alloy barrel, and accepts 1/2x28 threaded suppressors. Shooters will have an easy time choosing metal or optical sights. The factory-installed steel sights include a fully adjustable rear and front blade with a three-white-dot design. The included mounting plate allows for the mounting of a reflex eye, although the optical mounting does not allow for co-indexing.

I washed the barrel out of the box, applied some grease and measured the trigger. It registered 5.2 pounds on my scale, which is pretty good for any gun of this type from the factory. There was a level of pick up and some rough pulling, which I found to be smooth when I used it later. I have no doubt that a little adjustment from a skilled gunsmith could make it smoother and easier.
Given the current state of .22 LR ammo supply, I was once again faced with shooting what I had, not the load of my choice. I found a leftover box of Eley Practice ammo with 40-grain lead bullets that worked well in my .22 LR RFPO pistol. A Blazer 40-grain lead, a partial zoom pistol match box and a Remington Target .22 LR that has been sitting for a while are also available. There weren't enough of these to do more than test function and accuracy, but I was lucky enough to find a Federal Champion Biob bucket - a 36-grain taped HP - that was left to hit an iron challenge match. .
I started my field session with a sight to get the feel of the rifle. Unfortunately, they zeroed in on 15 yards too quickly. I don't often like to compare one gun to another, but the Taurus felt about the same with the S&W M&P C.O.R.E and medium backstrap installed. The grip, grip angle and trigger reach are closed. My plan was to shoot the RFPO at the upcoming Steel Challenge match, so after 30 rounds, I went back to my office to look at the optical option.
Installing a reflex sight is easy. The mounting plate is not on the slide. It is mounted on the top of the uncovered barrel facing the ejection port, so G-forces are not an issue. It has multiple screw holes inside to accommodate rear mount screws for Trijicon RMR, C-More STS, Vortex Venom, Docter Noblex, Burris FastFire, Sightmark Mini, Holosun HS507C and Leupold Delta Point Pro sights. . The FF4 Zero and BYOB load quickly went to the 25 yard bench. I then set up some white cut targets and ran several target practices at 15 yards from the low setup. As I cycled through the three magazines provided, I found them all easily loaded to the stated 16-round capacity. I especially like the wide open windows so you can see at a glance how many rounds are left. I found this useful in Steel Challenge. As an RO, I've seen more than one shooter hold magazines for strings, only to find that the mag isn't as full as it should be when the slide is closed.
Using the look, close, look technique, I find that the mount is forward and the angle of the grip hits the point on the target. Another 40 rounds low range. Then I went back to the 25-yard bench for accuracy tests. The accompanying chart shows that the Taurus delivers more than adequate accuracy for the metal test with good shots.

A six-stage Iron Challenge match was next, and it was a mix of close and fast, as well as far and off-speed. The 5 pound plus trigger didn't hurt me on Smoke & Hope and Roundabout. But it didn't help me with the pendulum or my personal nemesis-speed options. Using federal BYOB ammo, the gun sang without any drama. After the match I stayed to run some practice steps on the speed options.

At the time, there were more than 400 rounds of mixed ammunition through the Taurus, and the only failures were two misfires with the Aguila rounds during the actual test phase. That's more reliable than I'd expect from a .22 LR pistol—especially one in the sub-$500 price range. With a little startup tweaking, this could be a solid choice for RFPI or RFPO or both. Optics can already be fast enough to enable both options.
