The days of the jumbo jet are numbered. Since their inception in the late 1960s, aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 have been the undisputed queens of the skies.

But the size, reliability of the four engines, and the size of these large planes are not competitive enough to justify their price. These 20th century relics often end up in places like the Southern California Logistics Airport - better known as the "boneyard".

Located in the Mojave Desert, Victorville has a hot, dry climate that makes it a great place to store older aircraft for long periods of time.

After collecting valuables, such as electronics, interior items and reusable items, the rest is shredded and sold as scrap.

But as the average age of its 747 aircraft approaches 20 years, British Airways is slowly phasing out the older birds.

As a result, many of the old McDonnell Douglas DC/MD-10 and MD-11 transporters have been retired to the desert.
