A modernized version of the M-84 main tank designed by the Military Technical Institute and manufactured by the Serbian Technical Repair Institute "čačak". The first version, designated the M-84AS1, was released in 2017. Subsequent updates included several improvements and were released in 2020 and 2021

The latest upgrades to the AS1 and AS2 include newly developed modular high-explosive weapons, modern weapon systems and fire control systems, remote control turrets and other upgrades.

21 subsystems will be updated with modern solutions The AS1 and AS2 were developed in parallel and differed in the number of subsystems and turret-specific modifications of the RCWS, commander mounting and equipment. The AS2 can be used as a platoon command tank after mass modernization begins
The need to modernize Serbia's aging M-84 aircraft has given the Belgrade Military Technical Institute and the Serbian Defense Industry many tasks and challenges.
Serbia inherited 212 M-84s from Yugoslavia that did not undergo any form of modernization from the start. Although an upgrade program called the M-84AB1 was released by Serbia in 2004 that included several Russian weapon systems, it was not widely built and only 10 M-84s were produced. Amended for this standard, probably due to the financial and political situation in Serbia at the time
Since the development of tanks in the world, we have seen many basic improvements such as explosive armor, subsystems and optics or active defense systems. It was clear that the M-84AS upgrade was outdated and an entirely new upgrade program was needed to bring the M-84 to a level where it could maintain its effectiveness and safety.
M 84a4 Sniper: A Joint Legacy
The first version of the M-84AS1 in 2017 had many changes and improvements compared to the basic M-84A and M-84, along with the original T-72 model.
The first domestic high-explosive weapon was applied (like the Kontakt-5), it provided better protection to a larger area of the tower and a large part of the front plate. The house had a laser and radar warning system along with a remote-controlled 12.7 mm gun station and a new fire control system with soft active defense equipment. The rear of the hull and turrets are equipped with cages, while the front hull-mounted armor plate remains.
Although these changes were an improvement over the previous M-84, the design still had some serious flaws, especially in terms of safety. It has been criticized for heavy weapons, bad location and low awareness
Vulnerabilities in this first version were identified and further development of the update package began The result was an updated M-84AS1 that was released in 2020
Why Ukraine's T 84 Tank Can't Stand Up To Russia (or America)
The M-84AS1 from 2020 fixed many bugs found in the previous version of 2017.
The tower and its hull are almost completely covered with home-made M19 weapons, which according to the designers provide greater protection against modern threats such as high-altitude or tandem-charge missiles. Nine new subsystems have been assembled
Missiles such as the FGM-148 Javelin are enhanced by the advanced use of modular explosive weapons that enable turret-mounted and soft kills. Day/night, thermal camera with 6 light cameras and command field
And missile launchers are combined with smoke-class automatic launches towards threats for protection. Second deployment (as opposed to third deployment in other countries) ERO-19 improvised explosive device.

Better than the Contact-5 and developed in comparison to the Relict to protect against high-energy HEAT weapons. Additional slat armor to protect against rocket-propelled grenades is also missing
Capable of operating in milliseconds with modern UV ssors for fire detection to prevent explosions in tank rooms. A new type of RCWS has been added to the 12.7mm machine gun so that the commander can work safely in the turret.
In total, 21 new subsystems were developed to increase the survivability, mobility and accuracy of the M-84AS1 and M-84AS2.
The 125 mm airburst round with its superior penetration and explosive characteristics is known to penetrate 500 mm at a distance of 2 km from the tank-propelled APFSDS cell.

A number of improvements have been adopted for the Serbian M-84AS1 and M-84AS2 domestic upgrades, providing a better result than other short upgrade programs developed for the T-72. The basic armor of some versions of the T-72 is better, stronger and better equipped modular explosive reactive armor than the basic armor of the M-84.
It will provide better cover and protection and the new system will provide better information in additional situations with better guns and ammunition The new tank variant will feature an improved engine (increased from 780 to 1000 horsepower) over the standard T-72, giving the M-84AS1 an overall combat advantage over other modern T-72 variants. It is considered better than its Russian counterpart T-72B3 in terms of safety This article requires additional citations for validation Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources Unprotected material may be compromised and removed Find source: "M-84" - News · Journal · Book · Scholar · JSTOR (March 2021) (Learn how and how to remove this template message)

The M-84 is based on the Soviet T-72M (the export variant of the T-72A) but with several improvements, including the introduction of the local fire control system of the T-72M, improved combined arms and a 1000-hp engine. The M-84 entered service with the Yugoslav People's Army in 1984. The improved M-84A version left service a few years later Other variants were introduced later, mainly package upgrades
There were about 240 Yugoslav companies directly involved in the production of the M-84, and about 1,000 others indirectly involved.
The winner chose Đuro Đaković (Company) Croatia from Josip Broj Tito over other proposed producers from Serbia: Gosa FOM Smederevska Palanka and Mašinska Industrija Niš which was Yugoslavia's locomotive and wagon manufacturer at the time.
The main manufacturers directly involved in the production of the M84 main tank in the SFR Yugoslavia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia within the former republics are:

The Serbian version of the M-84 launched in 2004 is the M-84AS. It features a new fire control system, Kontakt-5 ERA armor, AT-11 sniper anti-tank, Agava-2 thermal sight and Shatora. Defense suit Very similar in design and capabilities to the Russian T-90S The latest prototype version of the Serbian M-84AS1 released in 2017 has a new fire control system with local laser and radar warning systems, 12.7mm RCWS and a new version of Home Defense Armor with a soft active defense suit. Revised later A prototype of the same tank released in 2020 has improved ERA M19-style armor and new ammunition along with new position equipment.
About 150 M-84 tanks were exported to Kuwait The breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s prevented the export of the M-84. Sales of the M84, including contract negotiations with foreign partners, were made through Yugoport SDPR, then acting as the Yugoslav government. Produced and delivered by Đuro Đaković and performed by Đuro Đaković
The M-84A is armed with a 125mm soft cannon from the Soviet 2A46. The smoke detector placed in the middle of the barrel is protected by a thermal coating that minimizes barrel deformation at high temperatures and is sure to cool at the same rate as the quick shot. The M-84 uses an automatic loader, which can sustain a rate of 8 rounds per minute
The cannonball is placed under the turret (40 rounds) inside the tank cover This concept was inherited from the original Soviet design for the T-72 and is both a strength and a weakness of the tank. Although the bottom tunnel of the tower is less likely to be hit by an accident or mine, this means that bullets from gasoline and secondary explosions will not survive the teams and tanks. explosion

As primary armament, the M-84 is equipped with a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7 mm anti-aircraft gun in the conning tower.
All versions of the M-84 have a crew of three The commander sits on the right side of the turret, the gunner on the left and the driver in front
