The Air Force has officially begun procurement of an Army pistol system to replace its current arsenal of handguns, the service announced Monday.

The Air Force Small Arms Program Office procured approximately 125,000 M18 pistols at a cost of $22.1 million to replace the M9 sidearms that Airmen have handled since 1985.

A compact variant of the M17 that, based on Sig Sauer's P320, was accepted by the Army under the MHS 2017 program, deliveries of the M18 should end in August 2022, the service said.

"M9s are larger, heavier all-metal handguns," Merrill Adkison, AFLCMC Small Arms Program office senior logistics manager, said in a statement. "While M18s are lighter polymer pistols with consistent pull and adjustable grips for large and small hands."

The Air Force procurement comes on the heels of the Marine Corps, which formally began procurement of the M18 in late May with a completion date of "late 2023."

The push to replace the M9 came in response to problems with the age and maintenance costs of the existing gun arsenal; according to the AFLCMC, the M18 costs only a third of the price of the M9.

"It is critical for the U.S. Air Force to continue to improve and replace weapons systems to keep up with potential adversaries and put the best technology and equipment available to our Soldiers," said Brian Lautzenheiser, Small Arms Program Director. statement.
