Rush and gave birth to the city of Orogrande. For several years after that, the town was the center of intense mining activity and the population grew into the thousands. There was fifty-five miles of main water from the Sacramento River to the site of the city. Almost overnight, a hundred houses were built to house a fraction of the influx. Some were forced to live in shacks and tents that were hastily erected. As has often happened in the past, the gold was less than expected and mining began to slow down. Today Orogrande has become a post office, a few shops and about fifteen families.
